Direct thermal and thermal transfer

There are two methods of thermally printing labels with variable information; direct thermal transfer and thermal transfer. Both methods are explained in more detail below.

Thermal materials are coated with a chemical layer on paper or synthetic substrates that can be activated by heat. When printing labels via a direct thermal printer, small elements on the printer heat and activate parts of the chemical layer to create the desired image. Thermal materials allow you to print variable information on blank or pre-printed labels.
Thermal paper labels are a good choice for retail, logistics, and other industries where the label is not exposed to heat or humidity after being applied. Heat-sensitive synthetic materials are ideal for carton and retail packaging labels in the refrigerated and frozen food industry, where labels are exposed to high humidity and rough handling during transport.

Thermal transfer labels
Thermal transfer materials work similarly to direct thermal materials. They have a finish (usually matte) that will accept ink transfer from the ribbon to the label. Labels are printed by thermal transfer printers where a layer of ribbon is placed on top of the label at the location of the print head. The printhead elements heat up and cause the ink on the ribbon to transfer to the label, creating the desired image.

Thermal transfer paper labels are a good choice in situations where direct thermal is not suitable or where ribbon print quality is required. Thermal transfer synthetic labels are ideal for outdoor labels and applications where high moisture or abrasion is expected.

Thermal cash register paper is also known as roll thermal cash register paper and thermal printing paper. It is a roll printing paper produced by simple processing with thermal paper as raw material. Thermal cash register paper is mainly used in thermal printers of cash register systems. Thermal cash register paper has uniform color development, good smoothness, high whiteness, long shelf life and no printing consumables, no carbon ribbon, ribbon or ink cartridge. Therefore, thermal cash register paper tends to replace ordinary cash register paper in the cash register system. Thermal cash register paper has been widely used in various industries such as supermarkets, hotels, banks, telecommunications, medical care, and catering.
